Last week, I wrote about creating your own container herb garden. Now I wanted to share how I preserve herbs! To keep your plants producing, it’s important to regularly trim them so that they don’t go to seed. I don’t like to waste things so when I do a trimming and have excess, I use the following method to preserve them before they go bad!
WHAT YOU NEED:
- Knife/cutting board
- Water
- Ice cube tray
I used something similar to THESE that I found at TJ Maxx. They are a small size with a silicone bottom to make it easier to pop out the cube…They’ve worked really well so far! - Quart sized freezer bags
- Permanent marker
HOW TO PRESERVE THE HERBS:
Rinse herbs and chop. (hint: if your blender has a “chop” function, use that!)
Fill up the ice cube trays with the chopped herbs. Add about 1/4 teaspoon of water to each section (or more depending on size of tray) and place in the freezer for several hours until frozen.
Label a freezer bag with the herb type/date and remove frozen cubes…put in bag and back in freezer for later use!
